An added benefit are the strong lines that purlins create by running parallel to the ridge beam(s). WebAs a result, historic roofs come in many different forms and styles, and indeed different timber types. Broadly pitched roofs can be sub-divided into two categories: purlin roofs and rafter roofs. In the first, trusses support purlins (horizontal timbers) which in turn support the common rafters.
